Dr. Khor Geok Lin, Emeritus Professor of the University Putra Malaysia and member of the Advisory board of the PureCircle Stevia Institute presented on the “Naturality and Role of Stevia in a Healthy Diet for Combating Non-Communicable Diseases” at Food Ingredients Asia, a leading global gathering for food ingredient suppliers, held in Bangkok, Thailand from September 13 – 15, 2017.

During her presentation, Dr. Khor highlighted how high purity stevia extract, derived from the leaves of the stevia plant, is a safe, natural, zero calorie sweetener. When stevia is used in place of sugar in a healthy diet, it can help reduce calories, and aid in combating many key non-communicable diseases such as obesity and diabetes, which are on the rise in Asia and the rest of the world.

The use of stevia as a plant based ingredient to reduce added sugar was timely for the food and beverage industry conference attendees. In Thailand, the Thai Excise Department recently implemented an excise sugar tax on certain beverages in an effort to reduce consumption of sugar and to increase health consciousness. In an interview with Food Focus Thailand magazine, Dr. Khor highlighted the benefits of stevia as an ingredient to help reduce added sugar, and talked about its safety for everyone, including those with diabetes, children, and pregnant or nursing moms.
