PCSI and PureCircle to Showcase Stevia at the China Nutrition Society’s Conference, Beijing
The biennial National Nutrition Science Conference hosted by the Chinese Nutrition Society is taking place May 22 – 26, 2017 in Beijing during the country’s National Nutrition Week. The theme for this year’s conference is Innovation Driven Nutrition Development – From Foundation to Application. More than 2,500 nutrition scientists and practitioners from academia, government and industry are expected to attend.
Reducing sugar in the Chinese diet is a focus of China’s 2016 Dietary Guidelines, which recommends reducing sugar intake to less than 50 grams per day (12.5 teaspoons), preferably limiting sugar to half of this, or 25 grams per day (6.25 teaspoons). Recent research points to an increased consumption of sugar-containing foods, particularly among Chinese children.
Dr. Priscilla Samuel, PureCircle Stevia Institute’s Director, will present on May 24 about the Health Benefits of Stevia and its Role in Sugar Reduction. Her abstract will highlight how stevia, a natural, plant-based, zero-calorie sweetener, offers one approach to reducing both calories and sugar in the diet. Stevia has been approved for use in food and beverages by all major regulatory bodies around the world including China’s regulatory authorities.
The PureCircle Stevia Institute will also be educating attendees about stevia at their exhibit booth and will have educational materials on stevia and, PureCircle Ltd. will feature a stevia sweetened sugar-free lemon iced tea at the booth as well.
